Overview

Tropic Star Lodge is like a section of Paradise taken from the mountain side then enclosed by a tropical jungle teeming with wildlife and tropical flora. Tropic Star is one of the most comfortable and truly great fishing lodges of the world.  For over 20 yearsTropic Star has continued to provide what many consider to be the finest offshore fishing anywhere. In terms: angling, quality of service, accommodations, ease of access, and value, we recommend Tropic Star wholeheartedly. Because Tropic Star Lodge enjoys a high percentage of repeat clientele, you are urged to book well in advance to ensure availability for your preferred dates.

Accommodations

Tropic Star Lodge can accommodate up to 36 guests in large, comfortable, air-conditioned rooms with private bath and dressing areas. These air-conditioned rooms offer a great view of Piñas Bay. From the made-to-order breakfasts and great picnic lunches aboard the boats to the 4-course gourmet dinners served each evening, guests will find the quality of the dining to be outstanding. A luxurious private villa called "The Palace" is also available for up to six guests at an additional cost.

Fishing

Panama means "an abundance of fish", and Piñas Bay really supports this definition. Snapper, dolphin, tuna, grouper, amberjack, roosterfish, rainbow runner, and mackerel are all available in these waters to the visiting angler. In Recent years, "Pacific" tarpon have also been caught in the 50- to 100-pound range. Black, blue, and striped marlin abound in in Pinas Bay, especially in the winter, typically they can be found "right outside the front door," adding to the uniqueness of this location. In fact the majority of fishing is within 20 minutes of the lodge. There have been over 150 world records set at this internationally known lodge more than in any other location in the world. The prime Black Marlin season runs from mid-December through April. Then the Pacific Sailfish come from April through June. In July another run of marlin comes in. The Striped Marlin season is considered mid-March through May. Tropic Star has a fleet of twelve 31-ft twin-engine Bertrams, which can comfortably accommodate one to four anglers. All conventional tackle is provided. Fly fishermen must bring their own gear.

Fishing in Panama is strictly catch-and-release- in order to preserve the sport-fishing industry. All billfish, (ie: Marlin and Sailfish), are protected by catch-and-release laws; the crew makes every effort to safely release these species immediately after photos are taken. However, table fare, such as tuna, snapper, dorado (mahi mahi), wahoo, snook, etc. may be kept.

***At an additional cost, you may fish inshore on a panga in the waters near the lodge where snapper, roosterfish, and several types of jack are the predominant target. Typically slow trolling with live bait in conjunction with casting top water poppers from the panga is the preferred method. The dock master will arrange for a boat, captain, and mate

Getting There

An international flight from the U.S. into Panama City will start your trip. On a Saturday morning, anglers take a charter flight to Piñas Bay followed by a short boat ride to the lodge.

Activities

The Lodge can arrange optional afternoon activities which include inshore fishing and a jungle river trip to visit the native tribes at an additional cost, payable direct). The jungle river trip can only be made during certain tides; so, if you are interested, please ask the manager about the afternoon's tides. Often, guests bring candy for the children and special "gifts" for the Indians, such as cloth, thread, needles, or other items that are useful to them. School supplies for the children are always welcome.

**At no additional cost, you may kayak in the waters near the lodge or hike a jungle trail (about 30 minutes) that has been cut across to Playa Blanca a gorgeous white beach where swimming, snorkeling, sunning, and shelling can take place. You can rent snorkeling gear from the office. In order to really enjoy this walk, you should be in good physical shape as the terrain is mountainous!
