World Record Fish: Complete IGFA All-Tackle Records, Size Thresholds & Trophy Standards

The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) maintains the definitive registry of world-record catches across hundreds of species and line classes. This guide compiles the all-tackle world records for the most popular freshwater and saltwater game fish, along with fish-of-a-lifetime size thresholds that represent the top tier of angling achievement.

Whether you're chasing records on a fly fishing expedition, targeting trophy fish on deep-sea fishing trips, or planning an international trip to fish the Bahamas, these benchmarks tell you exactly what "world class" looks like for your target species.

How to Submit an IGFA World Record

If you catch a potential record fish, follow these steps:

  1. Weigh the fish on a certified scale — Must be certified within the last 12 months
  2. Photograph extensively — Multiple angles, with the fish on the scale, and with the angler
  3. Measure the fish — Length and girth with a clearly marked measuring device
  4. Preserve line samples — Cut and retain 50+ feet of line used, including the leader
  5. Complete the IGFA application — Available at igfa.org
  6. Submit within 60 days — Applications must be received within 60 days of the catch
  7. Application fee — $50 per record application
