Mexico is two fisheries wearing the same passport. The Yucatán Peninsula — Ascension Bay, Espiritu Santo Bay, Xcalak, Chetumal Bay, Mahahual — is one of the most consistent permit fisheries in the world, with grand slam water that regularly produces bonefish, permit, and tarpon in a single day. Baja California Sur — East Cape, La Paz, Magdalena Bay — is a completely different fishery: beach-casting for roosterfish, offshore bluewater for marlin and dorado, and quality jack and jurel action on panga-based day trips.
Ascension Bay is the heart of the Yucatán flats program. Lodges like Grand Slam, Palometa Club, and Casa Blanca run professional permit-specific outfits with guides who have grown up fishing the bay. A trip here isn't about numbers; it's about shots. A good day might be 15–25 permit shots; a great day is landing one. The surrounding mangroves and rivers produce baby tarpon on 8-weight gear — a stellar afternoon option and one of the most underrated saltwater experiences in the Western Hemisphere.
Xcalak and Chetumal Bay at the far south of Quintana Roo fish lighter-pressured water with resident tarpon and permit populations. Costa de Cocos Lodge is the anchor operation — small, family-run, excellent for anglers who prefer quiet flats and village-style accommodations over resort-scale lodging.
Baja roosterfish on the fly from the beach is a physical, committed pursuit. East Cape and the Los Barriles-to-Los Frailes stretch fish best June through October. Early morning walk-and-wade with a 10–12 weight, looking for cruising pods in the wash. Fish over 30 pounds are caught annually; fish over 50 are a real possibility. Magdalena Bay adds striped marlin, dorado, and yellowfin to the menu.
Cancún (CUN) and Cabo San Lucas (SJD) are the gateways. Cancún connects to the Yucatán coast by private shuttle (2–5 hours); SJD serves East Cape and southern Baja. Shoulder seasons (late fall, early summer) offer better pricing. Hurricane season (Aug–Oct Atlantic side; Sep–Oct Pacific) can cancel trips — buy travel insurance.
