Tierra del Fuego's Rio Grande is the best sea-run brown trout fishery in the world, by a wide margin. Brown trout were introduced to the island in 1935; within a few decades they'd discovered the Atlantic and evolved into a sea-run strain that now returns to the river in summer at average sizes of 10–15 pounds, with 20+ pounders landed every week during peak season.
Lodges on both the Argentine and Chilean sides of the river — Kau Tapen, Las Buitreras, Villa Maria, Despedida — operate from private beats under strict catch-and-release regulations. It is technical fishing: heavy Patagonian winds, big flies, sink-tips, and precise casting are the daily requirements.
Best Methods
- ● Swinging large flies (leeches, sunray shadows) with sink-tips
- ● Short, punchy casting into constant 30+ mph wind
- ● Nymphing deep pools in lower water
- ● Intermediate lines on the upper river
Gear Notes
8- or 9-weight rod, 9 feet. Switch rods increasingly popular. Multiple sink-tips (T-8 through T-14). 15–20 lb fluorocarbon leaders. Serious rain gear — weather is a constant factor.
