See 7 Trips Where You Can Catch Roosterfish

Roosterfish are pacific-coast royalty — distinctive seven-spiked dorsal fins, brutal strength, and a willingness to crash surface offerings in the wash along tropical beaches. They're found only in the Eastern Pacific from Baja California down to northern Peru. A 50-pound rooster on light tackle in the surf is one of the most underrated accomplishments in saltwater fishing.

The East Cape of Baja (Los Barriles, La Ribera, Los Frailes) is the iconic roosterfish destination. Beach-casting with 10–12 weight fly rods or plugging with large surface poppers. Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula and Panama's Coiba Island produce year-round roosters from pangas; numbers are lower but average size climbs.

Best Methods

  • Beach-casting surface poppers at dawn
  • Walk-and-wade fly casting in the wash
  • Live-bait slow-trolling on pangas
  • Jigging deep ledges near points

Gear Notes

10–12 weight fly rod with shooting-head line. Heavy saltwater spinning rod rated for 40–50 lb braid. 40 lb fluorocarbon leader (abrasive scrape against sand).
