Argentine Córdoba dove hunting is in a category of its own. Estimates put the resident eared dove population at 50 million birds concentrated in the agricultural corridor north of Córdoba city. A single gunner on a quality estancia routinely fires 1,500–3,000 shells per day; record days exceed 5,000. Shell supplies are continuous, bird boys refresh guns, and champagne lunches are part of the format.
Outside Argentina, dove hunts in the American South (Texas, Georgia, South Carolina) offer more traditional low-volume mourning-dove shoots. Mexico's Sonora and Sinaloa produce excellent white-wing and mourning-dove numbers during migration. But for volume, nothing on earth compares to Córdoba.
Best Methods
- ● Stationary gunner positions in sunflower or sorghum fields
- ● Paired with "bird boys" who load and spot
- ● High-volume 20 or 28-gauge over-under shotguns
- ● Estate-based full-service wingshooting lodges
Gear Notes
20-gauge or 28-gauge shotguns are the Córdoba standard — balance of reduced recoil with shell availability. Improved cylinder and modified chokes. Shooting gloves and vests strongly recommended — 3,000 shells will bruise.
