See 5 Trips Where You Can Catch Elk

Elk hunting is the American West's signature pursuit. A mature bull elk weighs 700 pounds, carries antlers pushing five feet wide, and during the September rut he bugles challenges that echo across entire drainages. The physical demands are high — high-altitude hikes, unpredictable weather, spot-and-stalk on open terrain — but the reward is a pure wilderness hunt.

The Rocky Mountain states (Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, New Mexico) are the core — combined they host over a million elk. Colorado offers the most accessible over-the-counter tags; Wyoming has the highest tag success rates for guided outfitters. New Zealand holds a world-class free-range population on South Island stations. Archery September and rifle October are the two primary windows.

Best Methods

  • Bugling and calling during the September rut
  • Spot-and-stalk glassing high-country basins
  • Horseback hunting into wilderness areas
  • Ambushing wallows and feeding areas

Gear Notes

.270 Win minimum; .300 Win Mag preferred for longer shots. Premium optics — Swarovski, Zeiss, Leupold. Quality pack frame for packing out quarters. Broken-in boots are non-negotiable.
