Fallow deer are native to the Mediterranean but have been introduced and established worldwide — Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, and all across Europe. Mature bucks carry distinctive palmated (flat, paddle-like) antlers that mature into dramatic 240+ SCI trophies on the best operations. They're known for the April–June rut "groan" — a guttural belch that can be heard half a mile away.
Most fallow hunting today is high-fence estate work, though New Zealand South Island stations hold genuinely free-range populations, and Argentine Patagonia estancias produce excellent representative-class bucks in the mixed-species model. Fallow combine well with red stag or blackbuck on multi-species Patagonia hunts.
Best Methods
- ● Calling during the groan (April-June)
- ● Spot-and-stalk in open meadow country
- ● Ambushing feed and water in estate settings
- ● Archery at peak rut
Gear Notes
.243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, or .270 Win. Shots typically 100–250 yards. Moderate trophy-class caliber sufficient — these are not thick-hided animals.
