Pike are cold-water ambush predators — long, torpedo-shaped, lined with teeth like a chainsaw. Trophy pike fishing has always been concentrated in the boreal forest: the Canadian Shield lakes of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and the Northwest Territories; Alaska's remote drainages; Mongolia's massive northern rivers; and the trophy waters of Ireland, Finland, and Sweden.
The Canadian Shield fly-in camps are the classic American trophy destination. A week at a Saskatchewan or Manitoba camp produces a legitimate shot at a 40-inch pike — the benchmark trophy size. Post-ice-out (late May into June) is prime for the biggest fish; September produces strong numbers as pike feed up for winter.
Best Methods
- ● Large streamer flies stripped aggressively
- ● Topwater buzzbaits and surface plugs
- ● Spoons (Five of Diamonds, Daredevle) cast and retrieved
- ● Soft-plastic swimbaits near weed edges
Gear Notes
9- or 10-weight fly rod. Wire leader (40-60 lb) is non-negotiable — pike teeth will shred anything lighter. Conventional: medium-heavy spinning with 50 lb braid and 60 lb wire.
